Here is a video showing the standard gear we carried on our one day missions to run the Great Walks
Here is a handy gear list I got from an adventure race I went in. To me this is a sensible minimum level of equipment. Remember, conditions in the mountains in NZ can change rapidly. Be a boy scout – be prepared!
- TWO Thermal (or equivalent) long-sleeved tops
- ONE Thermal (or equivalent) long johns
- Thermal (or equivalent) Hat and gloves
- Windproof and waterproof (seam-sealed) jacket and windproof and waterproof (seam-sealed) overpants
- Survival Blanket
- Map and compass
- Whistle
- First Aid kit
We ran in trail running shoes, either INOV-8 or ASICS, ice breaker tramping socks are awesome and come with a life time replacement guarantee which I had to use after the Tongariro Northern Circuit. Running tights, shorts and layers of merino wool worked great on top.
For food our standard supplies were, salami sandwiches, lollies, chocolate bars. I used NUNS in my water to provide electrolytes and help get enough fluids (plain water is hard to drink for 10 hours!
Technology
We carried Go Pro cameras to record the beautiful views that are showcased on the Great Walks. We used GPS on our phones and or watches to record the runs which was uploaded to Strava to track the GPS data. I used Cyberlink Power Director video editing software to make the videos.
